Overnight Dance Ceremony to Celebrate the Summer Solstice
The Summer Solstice is a time when light energy is at its longest and most powerful. It is a moment to lift up our hearts and look outwards, and to remember that our personal wellbeing is connected to the wellbeing of the whole planet,
Close to the solstice, on the 16th and 17th of June Marold Emmelkamp and Catherine Wright will hold a Summer Dance Ceremony in a lovely little church hall in Roseburn.
The ceremony will provide an opportunity to join with others in deep community to dedicate our dance to the wellbeing of all our relations, human and non-human – past present and future. The deeper we dance, the more we will experience directly the reality of the interconnected nature of life. This recognition is not just a blissful experience; it is a remembering of our responsibility to honour and protect the sanctity of life, each in our own way.
When we dance together in ceremony a profoundly healing, catalytic and magical space is created in which each individual can find their own unique way of expressing their dreams and love for life through the dance.
The Movement Medicine teachings are represented in the Movement Medicine mandala and the ceremony is grounded in these teachings.
In this 20 hour celebration of life, we will have time to dance, and talk and share. And there will be a deep ceremony in which to surrender to something much bigger than ourselves, and receive support from the mystery that lies at the heart of everything.
We will gather at lunchtime on the 16th of June, to dance and share. Towards evening, we will open a ceremonial space, in which to dance and daydream and write and meditate. We will dance till the sun rises on the 17th, honouring the lightness of summer in Scotland
And then (still deep in ceremony) we will rest in the embrace of mother earth, and sleep a little. And in the morning, we will complete our ceremony, together, break our fast, and end our time together with a dance of gratitude and hope for ourselves and for all our relations.

“Dance first! Think later!!” That might seem like very odd advice. Movement Medicine teaches us that it is the best advice you could get. Quite simply the bigger our feelings are, the stronger our dancer needs to be. The ‘strength’ of the Dancer lies in becoming more and more aware of what is going on for us, and more and more able to move the body to get some support for the intensity of our experience.
“Set the body in motion and the psyche will heal itself” Gabrielle Roth.
Movement Medicine invites us to dance deep into the experience of our own bodies. Each of us is a dancer who has wild wisdom and deep knowing! Movement Medicine keeps bringing us back to the dancing warrior who knows how to find a way. You need no prior experience, only a desire to dance.
